1. What kind of experience do you have as a photographer?
Hi!
Thanks for clicking on my interview..if you are here, you want to know more about me and I'm chuffed.
I have been photographing Sydney 's newborn babies and families for almost 6 years now. I always get asked how I started and to be honest, while I did a number of photography courses throughout my life, a 20 year home wares buying career ended and this one began accidentally.
I am also a mum of two teenagers, who together with my husband are the joys of my life who have not only taught me about whats important in life but also the value of the memories we collect in our lives.
2. What type of photography do you specialise in?
My specialty is Newborn and Maternity and I've recently ventured into outdoor Family Photography. As my newborn clients grow up and families grow, I am loving that they choose me to keep filling up their image memory jars.
3. Where are you located?
I have a dedicated studio built on my home property in Roselands right near the Kingsgrove border of Sydney. My studio is filled with so many beautiful textures, bowls, wraps and of course flowers that I hold all my newborn sessions in my studio.
Most of my Maternity sessions are held in my studio also but I also do on location for outdoor maternity and family at some amazing parks. I've got some great secret spots with magical dreamy light.
4. When should clients book their photography sessions?
I always suggest that you start researching photography as soon as you find out you are pregnant, then narrow it down to 2 or 3 photographers.
Once you clear that first trimester start emailing your inquires. Don't hesitate. The talented and most experienced photographers in Sydney are usually booked about 6 months in advance.
Whilst last minute bookings are sometimes possible, most of us can only physically accommodate 3 or 4 sessions a week in order to allow the time that it takes for the actual sessions as well as admin and editing. It's really hard for to have to knock back newborn sessions, none of us really want anyone to miss out on those first few week sessions so once you choose, book it in to avoid unnecessary stress and disappointment.
Maternity Sessions can be booked at the same time as well and I have an incentive to book both sessions with me. Maternity sessions are usually photographed between 28-36 weeks.
Family sessions can be booked at any time of the year but bear in mind that I can only do one family weekend session per week so spots are limited.
5. What kind of prices and packages do you offer?
How much is it worth to you to have an experienced newborn photographer hold and handle your baby?
How much will a photo of your newborn, your baby bump or playing with your little ones in a park be worth to you when they are taller than you and beginning their own adult lives?
More importantly, how much will these images be worth to your children in their future? Definitely something to think about isn't it?
Newborn sessions take time and are not stock standard. I work with the mood and energy of your baby, it simply cannot be rushed. This is not fashion photography or editorial photography which is fast paced in comparison. Your baby will govern the flow and time of the session. Based on that I will customize set ups just for your baby around everything we have discussed prior to your session. Ultimately baby is my boss!
Outdoor Family session outfits are discussed at length to ensure they are dynamically and well coordinated.
Maternity sessions are discussed based on whether you are wanting chic glam in studio or boho sunset sessions.
These images will grace your walls for years to come. A little ground work means that they will be cherished and bring you continuous joy.
Maternity Packages start at $895
Newborn at $1095
Family sessions start at $895.
6. How should customers prepare for their photography sessions?
Because I work with Maternity, Newborns and Family, the preparation is different for all 3 sessions however I have simple and easy prep guides that will answer almost all your questions.
I am available to chat about your session as well, in fact I encourage it.
We need to make sure our visions align before your session. For newborn sessions I provide everything necessary for baby, and I have an online client wardrobe that you can also select from which is a great starting point for both newborn session mum's as well as family sessions and we can build on that.
All maternity gowns are provided, you just need to have your hair and make up done. Some choose to have it professionally done but I always suggest that you prepare yourself as though you were going out for a night on the town. Its more than enough but of you feel like being a little pampered, go for it.
Family sessions need some outfit prepping which I will gladly work with you to come up with the best combinations well in advance. Then you just need to turn up to our location on time and leave the rest to me.
7. What should customers expect during a photography session?
This is a great question!
Again all sessions vary a little.
Maternity Sessions usually go for approximately 1.5 hours
Newborn Sessions are very much dependent on your baby on the day.
They can range from 2 hours to 4 hours. If you consider nappy changes, feeds, possible cluster feeds, settling, awake time etc. the hours build up.
Each set up can take anywhere between 10 to 30 mins depending on how settled the baby is. I try to keep them under 3 hour sessions if possible.
This also depends on the poses you are wanting, some take longer than others. Fully wrapped sessions are very fast. Naked or part wrapped sessions usually take a lot longer.
Family sessions outdoor usually take about 1.5 hours before sunset until light is drifting away.
8. How do you ensure safety of the newborn during the session?
The most you can ask from anyone handling newborns is for them to take all practical and necessary precautions. I am up to date with all necessary immunizations as is my entire family as an extra precaution.
I am also known to be a little pedantic when it comes to anyone around us being unwell. I have being doing this long enough now, that my family and friends know not to visit me in my personal life even if they are simply feeling under the weather.
I pride myself on the cleanliness and organisation of my studio. All sanitizing is maintained to a very high standard after every session.
As a mother myself and having photographed hundreds of newborns, I am blessed to call this my job and treat each baby with the tenderness and love they deserve.
I have conditions in my prep guide that if any clients or their toddlers are feeling unwell-even on the morning of the session to notify me immediately for a likely reschedule.
I've also been lucky enough to have a wonderful studio space that has allowed me to host so many experienced and talented Newborn Photography Workshops in my studio. Watching and learning from some of the best global newborn teachers has been an invaluable asset to my craft and in turn for the benefit of my clients.
9. How soon will customers be able to get their photos?
With almost all my sessions I try to present an online gallery within the week. From those images you can choose to stay with my basic package or upgrade to another.
Once you select, I will hand edit every image you choose and present you with professional high resolution images in both color and black and white.
I also offer Wall Art as well as amazing custom Albums.
10. Do you have anything else you would like to tell us?
When I started photographing Newborns and then opened up my studio to Maternity and Family Sessions as well, I hadn't realized how much my previous twenty year career would have helped shape the styling of my sessions.
My use of muted colors, textures, original creations, and passion for the finished product of what will grace your walls has helped me become one of Sydney's most booked out photographers. Influencers and TV stars have graced my studio many times. I have won more awards than I could have imagined possible.
Apart from State Awards and Accreditation, I have also managed to come 3rd internationally in the Newborn category as well as being a global finalist for the Maternity category.
While that's wonderful and helps me to push the boundaries of my creations and to be technically praised by incredibly talented judges, I feel that my biggest success is the high rate of client referral that I have.
Majority of my new clients come from hearing previous clients speak of their experience with me. No award can possibly compete knowing this in a small business such as my own.
I'm known to my clients as the 'baby whisperer' and they often ask me how I'm so patient. My answer is easy, babies feel your energy. Its my job to make sure they feel safe and warm while we create some magical irreplaceable memories.
If you'd like to know anything else at all, I'm always ready to talk photography and sessions and I'd love to hear from you!
