1. What kind of experience do you have as a photographer?
Hi there, I'm Kelly the owner and creator of Kelly Jordan Photography. My love of photography has always been part of my life. I completed my degree in Visual Arts and started in the portrait photography industry straight out of graduation. This began a love for portraits that I didn't know I had.
Kelly Jordan Photography began in 2008, photographing maternity, newborn, family portrait sessions, and birth documentary photography. Over the years I have photographed more than 1000 families and continually evolved my creativity through education and curiosity.
I became an accredited photographer with professional recognition from AIPP and was awarded for creative and documentary portraits from RISE awards, & the Australian Photographic Prize.
2. What type of photography do you specialise in?
I specialise in all stages of the family from maternity to birth and newborn, through to grown children. I am best known for my birth and newborn photography. Who doesn't love a gorgeous fresh baby? It's all their details of tiny toes and hands, soft feathery hair, teeny dimples, and happy baby smiles (it's not always wind!). I'm honoured by the trust families put in me to capture these moments.
Our newborn sessions are usually captured in our natural light studio. I do love the opportunity to take advantage of the beautiful golden light at sunrise and sunset, some of our adventurous families will venture out with newborns, but mostly my maternity and families with older children will take advantage of these outdoor sessions.
3. Where are you located?
My studio is centrally located in the heart of South Melbourne - Level 1, 144 Cecil Street, South Melbourne. I operate on an appointment only to the studio.
I love the natural light in our studio, with large windows flooding the room, it is bright at all times of the year. Located across the road from South Melbourne market, I am easy to get to and there is a large amount of street parking and also parking at the market. All our beautiful props, backgrounds, wraps, and accessories are available in the studio. The studio is comfortably fitted with seating, and change table. Our design room has a tv, tea facilities and comfortable chairs to take a break from the studio. Especially great for older siblings to relax while photographing baby.
I am not limited to photographing in my studio. I work with clients prior to their portrait session to design their shoot. This leads to a creative experience through planning, and working out locations and style. A finished style could be documentary style in the client's home, one of my favourite outdoor locations or even traveling interstate. No destination is off-limits.
4. When should clients book their photography sessions?
Babies are arriving all year round, so I suggest researching and booking your photographer for maternity and/or newborn session around 12-20 weeks in your pregnancy. Definitely do not leave it until your baby arrives, I very rarely have last-minute bookings available. With such an important moment to capture, you want to be prepared.
Each of our portrait sessions is for the whole family to be photographed! If you are in the studio - I'm taking your photograph!
Maternity sessions are best scheduled when you are 28-35 weeks. I help guide you through the creative elements of your session, and you can have access to our Mama wardrobe for your perfect outfit if you wish.
Newborn sessions are best photographed 8-21 days old. I use your estimated due date as my guide in the calendar and then you simply let us know when your baby arrives - this could be earlier, or up to 2 weeks following your due date. We send you an email reminder as your due date gets closer, and we easily adjust your session date accordingly.
Older babies are best photographed 6-12 months, once they are sitting. My favourite stage is when they are sitting but not crawling. At this stage, they are super smiley, and still happy to lay on their back. It's really fun!
Family sessions are amazing for all ages and absolutely not limited to the studio.
5. What kind of prices and packages do you offer?
Kelly's studio offers simple print packages, and stunning wall art collections, as well as individual pieces and albums.
All print and wall art pieces include the matching digital file. Further detail for products and pricing can be found at www.kellyjordanphotography.com.au
6. How should customers prepare for their photography sessions?
Kelly has created an in-depth guide on preparing for your portrait session. She has regular communication with clients by email in the lead up to their session and phone call in the days before. The sweet spot with photographing newborns to be around 8-14 days - so we have a little lead time after baby arrives. Preparation is key to having a calm and fun experience, especially for new parents.
A few days before a newborn session, Kelly suggests organising the last details of outfits that parents and older siblings are wearing. Better still, organise all these things before the baby arrives, it makes everything feel easier! Last-minute shopping with a newborn is not ideal. Your little one will be styled in the studio with gorgeous little outfits, bonnets, blankets or wraps which we would have discussed in our call to plan your session.
Our detailed guides are all emailed and easy to refer back to before your portrait session.
7. What should customers expect during a photography session?
That once they step inside the studio, they can relax and Kelly will take care of everything.
A maternity session or family session will typically take around 1 hour.
Newborn sessions are a little more in-depth and taken at the baby's pace. Typically a newborn session will take 1-2 hours, sometimes a little longer if your little one needs some extra feeding, extra cuddles, or is a light sleeper. The studio is heated to around 26 degrees, to maintain a constant environment, that will allow your baby to go into comfortable sleep while not being dressed in lots of layers.
Design appointments can be scheduled on the same date as the portrait session, so clients can review and order their beautiful photographs on the same day. Alternatively, clients can select an alternative date in a week after the portrait session.
8. How do you ensure safety of the newborn during the session?
The safety of newborn babies is paramount in the studio and in client's homes.
Kelly is focused on following the cues of the baby and will never pose a baby in an unnatural, forced position. With many years of experience handling babies, Kelly's direction is natural and trusted by families, and supported by St Vincent Private hospital as their preferred photographer.
In the studio, all equipment and accessories are thoroughly cleaned between clients. Clients can trust that Kelly maintains insurance for herself and her business, and stays up to date on all immunisations including Covid-19, Whooping Cough and Fluvax.
9. How soon will customers be able to get their photos?
Clients are able to schedule their design appointment ahead of time to be held on the same date as their portrait session or at a later date. During this design appointment is when clients make all decisions on their artwork. Kelly's studio proudly creates heirloom artwork with clients photographs, with most popular items being heirloom albums, and stunning wall art available as framed canvas pieces or framed prints.
Once clients have placed their order, digital files are ready to be supplied to clients by 2-3 weeks. Heirloom custom printed products take 4-6 weeks to complete.
10. Do you have anything else you would like to tell us?
As a mama to two busy little girls, believe me when I say; I have been where you are. I understand the sometimes chaos of family life, and the deep need to capture the beautiful moments of your family. For the photographer who gets it and hears you – look no further, you found me.
My focus is on you and your family for your whole experience. I want you to feel the love, the warmth of a hug, the beauty of a smile radiating, whenever you look at your photography.
I can't wait to meet you at Kelly Jordan Photography.
