10 Questions with Lauren Vanier

Business: Lauren Vanier Photography

Location: Hobart, Tasmania

Experience: 10 Years

Photography Types: Baby, Cake Smash, Family, Maternity, Newborn

1. What kind of experience do you have as a photographer?

I'm Lauren, chief baby-whisperer, photographer and photography teacher at Lauren Vanier Photography.

I have been passionate about photography for as long as I can remember! When I was a little girl, my dad developed his own photos in a dark room from his film camera (yes, I am that old!) and had beautiful, enormous prints of his photos on the walls of our home. This was the starting point for a life-long love of photography. I have been a Canon girl since the days of film and I moved to my first DSLR when my daughter was born.

Being a mother was my inspiration to train and become skilled in Newborn Photography - I have spent countless hours studying, training and practicing to ensure I capture a baby's tiny details to perfection and that I am proficient and qualified to handle your precious new bundle safely. I have been running my photography studio and photography education business for several years now, from my home studio in Mount Rumney, just outside of Hobart.

2. What type of photography do you specialise in?

I specialise in Studio Newborn Photography. I love capturing the pure essence of a brand new baby, their delicate features, fine details and the connection with their family. I invest a lot of time in maintaining my skill and styling my sets to ensure that your session will be perfect and as individual as your baby.

Studio Newborn Photography is a highly specialised genre, and my style incorporates classic, crisp whites, soft neutrals and pops of your favourite colours. I love light, bright imagery and timeless portraiture that will grace the walls of your home for decades.

My studio is also equipped to capture Maternity, Cake Smash and Milestone photography sessions and I offer Fresh-48 Sessions on location at any of the Hospitals in Hobart or in your home within the greater Hobart area to capture those first few hours of your baby being Earthside.

3. Where are you located?

My studio is located in the picturesque Mount Rumney, less than 15 minutes from Hobart's CBD on the Eastern shore.

I offer on-location Fresh-48 sessions within the Greater Hobart area.

4. When should clients book their photography sessions?

I recommend booking during your second trimester of pregnancy. Once booked, I will pencil a flexible session date based on your due date and then we can adjust it if baby decides to come significantly earlier or later than scheduled! If your baby has already arrived, I can sometimes find a last-minute opening, so do get in touch. I keep my calendar flexible, as babies tend to come when they are ready - rather than when they are due.

5. What kind of prices and packages do you offer?

I have a wide range of packages and prices to suit all budgets.

Wrapped-up Newborn Mini Session Fee: $100
Newborn Session Fee: $300
Digital Image packages from $600
Print Collections from $1000

Professional Wall Art Instillation service from $250

Average Client Investment: $2250

6. How should customers prepare for their photography sessions?

There is not very much that I ask my parents to prepare, there's enough to worry about with a newborn in tow.

Family Wardrobe:

For family/parent images, I provide style advice to my clients and offer a client wardrobe of gowns that are flattering for new mums.

For baby, no outfits are needed - they will all be supplied. If you have a special or sentimental item to include in your session, just let me know and we can work out how best to incorporated it.

What do I need to bring to my session?

Babies will sleep best with a full tummy so please come prepared to feed baby at least a few times during the session. A dummy or pacifier can be very useful for the session, even if you don't normally use one.

If you will be utilising the gowns in the client wardrobe, I recommending bringing a selection of undergarments in both neutral and black and a strapless bra.

7. What should customers expect during a photography session?

My Newborn Photography sessions are baby-led.

When you arrive at your session, we will start by ensuring baby is fed, changed and comfortable. And that mum and dad are watered/caffeinated as required.

I keep the temperature of the studio warm to keep baby comfortable and sleepy.

If there are siblings to include in some family portraits, we will capture those first. I know that siblings have only limited patience for photos!

I prepare several sets for baby's solo portraits in advance of your session to ensure there is great variety in your images.

I will work through these sets as baby allows. Babies tend to enjoy the session best if well fed and sleepy - we will take all the time baby needs to be fed, made comfortable and gently put to sleep.

The session duration is variable depending on baby's mood on the day and I allow 2-3 hours to capture a full gallery of newborn and family images.

8. How do you ensure safety of the newborn during the session?

I have undertaken extensive Newborn Photography training with the best teachers in the industry from Australia and overseas. I invest a considerable amount of time in maintaining my skills and expertise. My sessions are baby led, and I watch carefully for any cues that baby might be uncomfortable. A lot of Newborn Photography poses are tricks of the camera angle and clever editing - there is always a hand right near your baby to ensure they are safe (but you wont see that in your final images). In addition to my training and experience in Newborn Photography, I am an avid advocate for healthcare and am fully vaccinated for all Australian Immunisation register standards including: DTaP (whooping cough), MMR, and Covid19. I regularly clean and sanitise the studio space and have strict rules on illness to keep my tiniest clients safe. As a mum of 3 myself, I know how important it is to ensure the safety of all clients who enter my studio space.

9. How soon will customers be able to get their photos?

What happens after the session?

After your session, I will go through all of the images and select the very best for editing. The images in your final gallery will be hand edited and available for viewing about 2 weeks after your session. A Newborn and Family session will yield a gallery of approximately 40 images. I will schedule your viewing appointment at the end of your session and you can come back to the studio, relax with a beverage of your choice and select the images / products you would like to purchase. It can be helpful to bring some photos of your walls so we can plan where your selected canvases/wall art will look amazing in your home.

Can you help me design my album?

YES! Albums are so much hard work to plan and design aren't they? I know! Let me take the hassle out of planning and preparing your album so you can just select your finish and I will do all the rest.

Can you help me hang my artwork?

Yes! I can arrange an appointment with my highly skilled artwork installer once your products arrive to ensure that your artwork graces your walls with no mess or fuss for you to worry about. Installation fees start at just $250.

Artwork and albums are printed and hand-crafted with my Australian-based professional print partner. Delivery and turn around times is usually approximately 3 weeks for artwork and albums.

What if I just want digital images?

Not a problem! I love to offer prints and artwork with my collections because I know (and I mean I KNOW) how hard it is to get around to printing out your images and displaying them. Don't let your family photos languish on your phone - show them off! Print them out! But if you really don't want to print them, that's ok too. I will place your purchased images on a USB for you to take away from your viewing appointment.

10. Do you have anything else you would like to tell us?
