Heinz Nurture Original Follow On Formula Review
I remember very well when I started feeding solids to my first baby. He was a big healthy boy, growing well through his first half year. At four months of age, he was already trying to grab my food out of my hands while I was eating, and his first food actually ended up being wedges! I don’t recommend wedges for a first meal by the way. I was a little confused and overwhelmed by all the guidelines around introducing solid foods. There was a lot of trial and error, a lot of getting food thrown back at me, and a lot of cleaning up puree of various colours from the walls and floor. I would worry constantly about whether he was getting the right amount of food and nutrients. Up until a baby is around six months, he should be exclusively breast or formula fed. Around six months his body is ready to add more food, starting with rice cereal and simple pureed fruit and vegetables, then adding things like cheese, meat, bread, pasta, yoghurt and more.

Between six and twelve months your baby will still need breastmilk or formula to ensure he is getting all the nutrients his growing body requires.
If your baby is throwing food back at you like mine was then you definitely need to supplement with breast or formula.
Breastmilk is the best option for your baby, but that option is not available to every mum.
There is a wide variety of excellent formula products on the market, so how do you know which one to choose?
Baby formula in Australia is very good, and in order to be sold, must comply with Australian standards.
Formula is made usually from cow’s milk, but there are other animal- and plant-based milk options as well.
It is made to closely represent the nutrients provided by breastmilk as possible, so you know that whichever one you buy for your child, it is not a bad choice.
There are formula products for newborns, but after six months of age, you need to be looking at a Follow On or Stage 2 formula.
They have a different nutrient mix to the newborn formula, for a number of reasons:
- Your baby’s body is at a different stage of growth and development
- Your baby will be moving around more now and need more fuel for energy and to build muscle strength
- Your baby will be facing more antibodies as he gets out and about more and will need a tougher immune system to fight them
- His digestive system is developing and he can process a greater variety of different things now
- Things like vision and teeth are growing quickly now and need specific nutrients
Heinz Nurture Original Follow On Formula is a great no-frills product in the baby formula market.
If you are lucky enough to have a baby with no specific dietary requirements and who isn’t fussy about what you give him, then a product like this is all you need.
It is cow’s milk based, so contains both lactose and animal proteins, and will be fine for the majority of babies.
It is very well priced, and with tins of formula sometimes setting you back up to $40 a pop, a product like Heinz is excellent value for money.
It RRP is at around $17 for 900g.
If you are starting with formula, this is a wonderful first choice, because if your baby takes it without problems, then you need not progress up to those made for dietarily restricted babies.
Some reviewers have mentioned that it doesn’t mix or dissolve as easily as other formula products, becoming frothy or needing a bit more stirring to get the right consistency. But most babies love it, so if this extra mixing doesn’t bother you then it is worth putting up with for the price.

Check the ingredients to make sure that there is nothing your baby has allergies to, but other than that, you should know there is a healthy balance of nutrition contained for a baby’s needs.
The formula is a mixture of nutritionally complete ingredients and vital vitamins and minerals.
There is also a range of other ingredients that promote optimal growth and development.
1. Vitamins
At this stage of development, your baby needs a range of vitamins to help them grow and give them energy.
Vitamin C is for the growth and repair of all body tissues, blood vessels, bones and teeth, and Vitamin D is also essential for bone development.
Vitamin A mainly promotes the development of your baby’s vision, while B1 or thiamine helps your baby to convert the new foods into fuel for his changing little body.
2. Minerals
Your baby needs a number of minerals for optimal health, including calcium, iron, folate, magnesium, iodine, and zinc.
These help with the strong growth of the tissues, blood vessels, bones, and brain, as well as fighting off infection.
