Natures Own Pregnancy Platinum Multivitamin Review

Natures Own Pregnancy Platinum Multivitamin Review

Prior to becoming pregnant you might have considered a nice sauvignon blanc as ‘wellness in a bottle’, but no more!

Your wellness has to come from other sources when you are busy growing a small person inside you.

You probably already know that it is very highly recommended that you take a multivitamin while pregnant, but how do you know which one?

What vitamins do you need?

When you are pregnant, your nutrient requirement roughly doubles, as of course there are now two of you.

While the myth about ‘eating for two’ is sadly a myth, eating the nutrients for two is actually a very good idea.

So don’t double your milkshakes and cheeseburgers, but do increase the amount you are getting of the following:

· Fish oil
· Iron
· Folic acid
· Calcium
· Vitamins B12, C, D and E
· Iodine
· Thiamine
· Riboflavin
· Niacin
· Magnesium
· Zinc

It can be very difficult to get some of the quantities of these nutrients that you need from food alone, so a supplement can be a better idea.

Also some of the vitamins and minerals are more easily absorbed when taken in supplement form.

Pregnancy vitamins do all sorts of wonderful things, including making your womb stronger, and reducing the chances of preeclampsia, neural tube defects, miscarriage and preterm labour.

They will replenish all the things that your baby is taking from you, and give you the energy you need to get through your day (although you may not really feel like it).

So it’s a good idea to take a multivitamin, but you still haven’t said which one.

I found that pregnancy multivitamins are all quite similar in terms of ingredients.

No matter which one you choose, as long as you take it properly, you are going to get most, if not all, of the nutrients that you and your baby need.

But they are not equal in terms of things like how easy they are to take, what they taste like and how much they cost, so when you are selecting your prenatal vitamin these factors need to come into consideration as well.

Today we are reviewing Nature’s Own Pregnancy Platinum.

This multivitamin is available most places, including supermarkets and major pharmacies. If you are a bit nervous about taking tablets or capsules then you might need to get your courage up a bit; these are on the hefty side.

You only need to take one a day which is good, and they are enteric coated capsules to go down easy and cause minimum of disruption to your already unsettled stomach.

I found while taking them that I felt pretty good, all things considered, so I feel like this product did it’s job.

With pregnancy you have good and bad days, as you can have good and bad pregnancies, and it’s hard to know what specific horrible symptoms you can attribute to what.

I had three babies and they were all healthy, full-term and good sized. I didn’t suffer from any pregnancy related conditions and had no side effects from the multivitamin.

I admit I felt very tired, but I can’t say that was the vitamins’ fault!

While they are listed as around $50 a bottle, for four months’ worth, you can very easily shop around and get a better price.

At the time of writing this, Chemist Warehouse listed them for half that.

With everything else you are shelling out for right now including all medical bills and expensive baby goods, a more reasonably priced vitamin is a bit of a bonus.

Let’s take a look at the different aspects of this multivitamin.

Does it work?

6/10

Sort of.

The ingredients include almost everything on the required list for healthy pregnant ladies and big, bouncing babies.

Interestingly, this vitamin doesn’t contain any iron, of which you need nearly 30mg a day when you are growing a baby.

When taking this product you will need to supplement the supplement with another supplement or with some food high in iron.

Good sources include red meat, seafood, beans or green leafy vegetables.

Price
6/10

This is not the cheapest prenatal vitamin on the market. At $55 for 180 capsules, Blackmores Gold are cheaper, and also contain iron.

There are more expensive products as well; in terms of price, this one lands around the middle of the pack.

Brand Strength
6/10

Again, in terms of brand strength, Nature’s Own lands around the middle.

There are better known and better trusted prenatal vitamins, including Blackmores and Elevit.

It is a recognised brand, but just not as recognised as others.

Value for Money
6/10

Considering that you still need to source your iron from somewhere, this product has medium value for money.

(If you can get it on special then this is obviously a much better deal, and therefore would be better value!)

As a pregnancy vitamin is does work fine however, and is very good value for money given the hard work it does and how important it is to you and your baby.

Ease of Use
7/10

The capsules are large, but slide down relatively easy and don’t have a taste or start to dissolve.

There is no weird aftertaste.

Some vitamins catch in your throat or on your tongue, giving you an unpleasant flavour, but this is not one of those.

The coating makes it easy to go down and is gentle on your stomach.

Verdict
6/10

Nature’s Own gets a medium rating.

It will give you (almost) everything you need for you and you baby’s wellbeing, is reasonably priced and easy to take.

Looking at competitors though there are more beneficial multivitamins on the market, and unless this one is on special, you can get quality pregnancy vitamins cheaper.

It’s fine, but not the best.

All I will say is that you definitely should be taking a multivitamin of some kind.

The Nature’s Own Pregnancy Platinum works well and won’t break the bank, so I highly recommend you take at least this as the minimum.
